CalFresh FAQ

Tell me more about CalFresh

  • California Fresh Market is a grocery store near Cal Poly. However, CalFresh (federally known as SNAP) is a free public program that provides a monthly cash grant for groceries. CalFresh gives students the flexibility to buy the foods they love at their favorite grocery stores or farmers’ markets (Trader Joe’s, Costco, Vons, Food 4 Less, the SLO downtown Farmers’ Market and more).

  • You will not take benefits away from anyone. There's no limit to how many people or families get help. There's nearly 2 million Californians who are eligible but haven't yet signed up. For every $5 of CalFresh spent in a community, another $9 of local economic activity is generated. This helps support jobs and businesses in your community.

  • No. Applying for CalFresh is free.

  • The amount of money that you receive depends on your household size, income, rent, and utilities. In most cases, full-time college students qualify for the maximum amount of $281 per month.

  • You will not have to pay back any benefits that you were eligible to receive. If you do not report necessary changes based on your household’s reporting requirements, however, you are responsible for paying back any CalFresh benefits you were not eligible to receive. To avoid this, be sure to communicate changes to your case worker.
